One day a million years ago when I first started teaching, ladies were required to wear stockings if they wore a dress. And that was rough because I taught in a K-3 school in south Lousiana. This particular school had no air-conditioning and a flat asphalt roof. It was in a very, very low socio-economic rural area. The roads were made of shell dust and the school was full to capacity and over-flowing.
This particular day I had on a dress...and the obligatory stocking. As I sat in my rocking chair reading a story with the children sitting on the floor around my feet, I happened to look down and see a little boy with huge tears running down his face. I asked what had happened and nobody seemed to have an answer. So I gathered the little guy up into my arms and quietly asked what was wrong. Between sobs he said, " You have a hole and your leg is leaking out." I looked down and sure enough..I had a hole in my stocking with a run that ran the length of my leg all the way down to my ankle. I guess to a little fellow who may never have seen his mom with stockings on it actually did look like my leg was leaking.
I love this profession!!!

did this get through ??? I think I'm about to figure this out. Anyway, I'm enjoying your blog.
Thanks for commenting on my blog. Yes, it did get through. I am just learning about all this, too. Please feel free to add or diagree or ask questions. I am still not sure how to increase my number of readers so it can become really fun for all of us. But I'll keep trying!
OH, that's kind of sad. He was probably freaking out! I remember going to that school with you sometimes when I was little. Good times.
I'll help you with your readership. We'll sneak you onto the SITS blogroll.
Your leg was leaking out, that has got to be one of the funniest things I've heard!
the innocence of children...what a cute story.
That is so funny! I just found you from SITS, and I'm sure I'll have to stop in every so often for a fix. I taught for 15 years before my kids were born, mostly second grade. The only thing I loved as much as second grade were my 2nd grade colleagues. One of them kept us in stitches with her stories, and I SO wish she would have blogged them. I love that you are doing this, and still enjoying your career. My own kids have been blessed with teachers like you, thank heavens!
Ok, I thought of one funny story that has been retold through the years of my "retirement".
Before conferences I used to have my second graders write their parents a letter telling them what to expect from the conference. They were to include three of their strengths or accomplishments and one area for improvement.
One little girl had no trouble whipping out a list of her strengths. The final one was an afterthought: "And, I have a good self of steam."
Priceless, just priceless. I love the things that come out of kids months. The other day, one of my babies was crying and my oldest said, "Mom, I think Quinn is having issues. You need to fit it." :)
That is one of the sweetest/funniest things I have heard in a while. Very cute.
I taught for four years before staying home with my kids. Your blog just reminded me of how much I look forward to going back. I was a first grade teacher adn they are just great!
